U.S. Food and Drug Administration issue draft guidelines for sodium reduction

U.S. Food and Drug Administration have issued draft guidelines for voluntary sodium reduction targets for the food industry.

The average sodium intake in the U.S. is approximately 3,400 mg/day. The draft short-term (two-year) and long-term (10-year) voluntary targets for industry are intended to help the American public reduce sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day.

KUDOS™ Potassium Bicarbonate has been developed as a healthy alternative to sodium bicarbonate, making it possible to achieve as much as a 50% reduction in sodium in the end product, at the same time as gaining a marginal increase in our in potassium intake – an essential mineral that we are currently deficient in as identified by the World Health Organisation.

Our work in the UK has highlighted that many bakery manufacturers don’t realise the impact leavening agents have on end product sodium levels. For more information on our products contact Siobhan.Hudson@kudosblends.com or click here for more information on the targets.
