Good news for our KUDOS™ Potassium Bicarbonate and Pell K™ range! The Department of Health have recently released a joint statement from SACN (Science Advisory Committee on Nutrition) and COT (Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment), encouraging food companies to explore the use of potassium-based sodium replacers.
At present, the UK population are consuming too much sodium and not enough potassium. High sodium consumption is associated with hypertension (increased blood pressure) which is strongly linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Potassium is an essential nutrient with a function and metabolism that’s interrelated with sodium’s. Sodium and potassium work together in the body to maintain normal osmotic pressure in body fluids and aid physiological functions of nerves and muscles.
SACN confirmed that increasing the level of potassium in the UK diet would have significant health benefits to the UK population. A higher level of potassium in the UK diet reduces blood pressure in people with and without hypertension and lowers their risk of strokes.
Sodium is commonly known for its salty flavour, however high sodium contents are often hidden in a wide variety of foods not known to be salty, such as many bakery products. The SACN and COT statement confirmed that if food manufacturers use potassium-based sodium replacers, it would have a positive impact on reducing the UK population’s risk of CVD.
